When Sleep Won't Come.
My Late-Night Survival Guide
Fibromyalgia and sleep don’t exactly go hand in hand. Some nights, no matter how exhausted I am, my body refuses to shut down. Other times, I take my prescribed sleeping pills, only to find myself lying there—wide awake, waiting for sleep that never comes. If you know, you know.
So, what do I do when sleep decides to ghost me? Here’s my go-to list for surviving those endless nights:
1. Scroll (but with limits)
Let’s be real—sometimes, I end up doom-scrolling. But I try to stick to things that won’t overstimulate me, like funny videos, soothing music, or catching up on messages. If you’re ever up at stupid o’clock, feel free to say hi on Twitter/X (or whatever they’re calling it these days).
2. Writing It Out
My brain loves to overthink at night. If I can’t sleep, I grab my journal or open my blog drafts and start writing. Whether it’s about my day, my symptoms, or random thoughts, getting it all out helps clear my mind. If you’re in the same boat, you can always check out my latest posts at
3. Gentle Movement or Stretching
Lying still in pain makes it worse. Sometimes, I get up and do light stretches or walk around the house. Nothing intense—just enough to tell my body, “Hey, we’re safe, you can relax now.”
4. Podcasts or Audiobooks
When my brain won’t switch off, I listen to something calming. No true crime (learned that the hard way). Just soft storytelling, nature sounds, or a slow, soothing voice that lulls me into relaxation.
5. Accepting the Sleeplessness
The hardest but most important thing: I remind myself that stressing about sleep only makes it worse. If I can’t sleep, I try to just rest. Close my eyes, breathe, and let go of the frustration. Tomorrow might be rough, but I’ve survived plenty of sleepless nights before—I’ll get through this one too.
